Growing concerns have emerged in Nigeria following renewed reports of xenophobic violence in South Africa, where foreign nationals particularly Nigerians have again become targets of hostility, attacks, and, in some cases, tragic loss of life.

The latest incidents, which reportedly include the killing of Nigerian citizens have sparked fear and uncertainty among members of the Celestial Church of Christ residing across major South African cities. With a significant number of CCC worshippers being Nigerians and other West Africans, the situation has raised serious spiritual, social, and humanitarian concerns within the Church community.

Investigations reveal that several CCC parishes in cities such as Johannesburg, Pretoria, Durban, and Cape Town are directly affected by the current wave of tensions. These parishes, known for their vibrant worship and strong sense of community, are now grappling with an atmosphere of anxiety.

Members who once gathered freely for services, vigils, and evangelical outreach now exercise caution amid fears of possible attacks. Some have reportedly reduced movement, while others are reconsidering their safety and long-term stay in the country.

A senior church worker, who spoke under anonymity, described the situation as “deeply troubling,” noting that “our members are living in fear, yet holding on to faith.”

Xenophobic violence in South Africa is not new. Over the years, similar outbreaks have been recorded, often linked to economic frustrations, unemployment, and social tensions. Foreign nationals are frequently accused rightly or wrongly of taking jobs or contributing to crime, leading to periodic unrest.

Despite repeated calls for unity and government interventions, the cycle of violence has persisted, leaving many African migrants vulnerable.

For members of our church, the impact goes beyond physical safety. The crisis has disrupted spiritual life, weakened morale, and introduced emotional strain among worshippers. Church activities, once marked by joy and divine fellowship, are now overshadowed by uncertainty. Families are anxious, and leaders are burdened with the responsibility of ensuring both spiritual and physical wellbeing of their congregations.

Speaking to Celestial Prerogative News, a church elder emphasized that “this is a time for the Church to rise spiritually. We must seek God’s intervention for our brethren.”

Observers have described the situation as a painful contradiction of African unity, especially considering the historical support many African nations, including Nigeria, extended to South Africa during the anti-apartheid struggle.

Religious leaders are urging all parties to embrace dialogue, tolerance, and mutual respect, stressing that lasting peace can only be achieved through unity.

While authorities in South Africa are expected to address the situation and ensure the protection of all residents, the Church continues to emphasize vigilance, prayer, and peaceful coexistence. Members are advised to remain cautious, stay informed, and maintain close communication with church leadership and local authorities.

As the situation unfolds, we should remains united in concern and faith. The current crisis serves as a reminder of the need for compassion, solidarity, and spiritual resilience.

For now, one message resonates across parishes and nations:

“Let us pray for Celestial members in South Africa.”
