The leadership of our Church is currently facing a predicament stemming from a lack of loyalty among the church authority. This has created a void that is proving difficult to fill. The issue of loyalty brings to mind a statement made by the Former Minister of Works and Housing & Lagos State Governor, Babatunde Raji Fashola, SAN, during his senate confirmation hearing on 14th October 2015. He remarked, “The concept of loyalty is a very strange one. My prayer is, may our loyalty never be tested.” This famous quote serves as a reminder that everyone has a breaking point when it comes to loyalty.

The relationship between Pastor Rev EMF Oshoffa and the members of the dissolved BOT headed by M/S/E Banjo can be best understood through the lens of loyalty. Loyalty is a concept that has been explored by philosophers and prophets throughout history. Philosophers define loyalty as a practical disposition to persist in an intrinsically valued associational attachment, involving a commitment to secure or at least not jeopardize the interests or well-being of the object of loyalty. It is a virtue that is expected by friends, families, religious organization and even countries strive to cultivate.

There is a school of thought that argues, saying loyalty is not value-free, a concept illustrated in a thought-provoking conversation between God and Satan in the Bible. This exchange can be found in the Book of Job, Chapter One, Verses 9 to 11. Satan questions Job’s loyalty, suggesting that it is contingent on the blessings and protection he receives from God. The underlying argument is that people are loyal only as long as they benefit materially or politically from the relationship. Once those benefits are removed, loyalty may falter. Job, however, proved his loyalty despite facing immense challenges.

The aforementioned explanation delves into Fashola’s thesis regarding the concept of loyalty. The abuse of loyalty is prevalent within Celestial Church of Christ, where integrity never count, with negativity are often overshadowed by blind loyalty. It is commonly believed that integrity is the key virtue sought after in individuals who are expected to do what is right, regardless of the circumstances. Conversely, blind loyalty is demanded from those who are easily manipulated.

Following a spiritual consultation in year 2001 to select a Pastor, a test of loyalty ensued. MSE Banjo demonstrated unwavering commitment to the seat of the Pastor, displaying total loyalty to the constituted authority. In year 2015, a coup d’état was attempted to unseat the Pastor, but the registered Board of Trustees (BOT) stood firm in their loyalty to the Pastor. Despite facing challenges, including a State High Court judgment, the BOT continued to support and protect the Pastor. The BOT also embarked on a process to invest billions of naira in an abandoned property in Imeko. Unfortunately, their loyalty was tested and ultimately abused.

It is important to note that loyalty cannot exist without integrity. Therefore, those who prioritize blind loyalty over integrity often find themselves facing unfortunate consequences. In a monarchy, loyalty to the institution of kingship supersedes loyalty to any specific king. However, within Celestial Church, there is a tendency to prioritize loyalty to individuals rather than to the institution itself.

The crux of the matter lies in the fact that when leaders within Celestial Church of Christ prioritize personal interests over the well-being of the Church, they jeopardize the favour and good standing of the Church in the eyes of God. Loyalty, an integral aspect of daily life is not inherently problematic. Rather, it is the misapplication of loyalty, particularly among Church leaders, that poses a significant issue. By staying true to themselves and prioritizing the interests of the Church above personal gain, leaders can ensure the prosperity and positive reputation of the Church members.

In order to strengthen the bond of loyalty among all leaders within Celestial Church of Christ, it is imperative that they should collectively agree on the definition of loyalty as an enduring commitment and complete dedication to a relationship built on deep trust, shared goals, and mutual value. Serving the Church within the administrative structure of the Church should not be driven by self-interest, but rather by a genuine desire to uplift others. Loyalty that is self-serving lacks nobility and is fleeting in nature.

Regrettably, many leaders within Celestial Church seem to prioritize self-serving loyalty, which has contributed to the current state of disarray within the Church. To shift this paradigm, our leaders must adopt a more enduring form of loyalty that is centered on long-lasting principles and the greater good, rather than catering to the whims of power-hungry individuals. Nevertheless, it may be beneficial for us to consistently remind ourselves of Fashola’s prayer: “May our loyalty never be tested,” as we navigate our daily interactions within the Church.

In conclusion, addressing the negative stereotype of loyalty within the Celestial Church of Christ authority is crucial in order to maintain the integrity and unity of our church. By understanding the complexities of loyalty and its implications, we can work towards fostering a culture of trust and commitment to our Church.
